Red Maple Sapling
Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is a fast-growing, decidious tree native to eastern and central North America. It is widespread and abundant throughout its range. It is frequently found in floodplains and wetlands, but is adaptable to a wide variety of site conditions.
It is an important winter food source for deer and ruffed grouse, while in summer its leaves provide food for several butterfly and moth species. It can also be tapped for sap to make maple syrup, but is less popular than Sugar Maple and Black Maple.
Due to its high adaptability, benefit as a wildlife tree, and dense foliage, Red Maple makes an excellent riparian area tree for ecological planting.
