Sugar Maple Sapling

C$3.50Price

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is a slow-growing, long-lived deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is tolerant of a range of soil conditions but does not grow in extremely wet or dry environments. Very shade tolerant, they are adapted to growing in the low-light conditions of old-growth forest understories, but able to undergo rapid growth when gaps open up in the canopy. It prefers cooler climates, as its seeds cannot germinate without near-freezing temperatures.

As the Sugar Maple's name suggests, it is the most popular species of maple to use for syrup production. Its populations have declined with the loss of old growth forest throughout its range. It is sensitive to pollution, acid rain, and road salt, contributing to its decline in parts of its range. As well, it has been displaced by the non-native Norway Maple, which was introduced to North America as a hardy city street tree in the 18th century.
